How A Pedometer Is Used
Pedometers can be great fitness devices that can integrate themselves into practically any life, providing powerful ways to track and measure our casual daily exercise. While formerly based on simple mechanical principles, today's pedometers are digital gadgets packed with a variety of features. If you're curious about what benefits a step counter can offer, or what features to search for, read on for a brief overview.
A majority of people are aware that we need to exercise more but it can be difficult making time with hectic schedules. We manage to get in what is referred to as "passive exercise" most days, but to get the most out of your daily exercise you probably should set a goal.
Pedometers can be good tools to help with this. By measuring the amount of walking we already do, we can practically assess how much exercise we're already getting. Once this is known, determining how much more is needed to become fit is a much easier task. Instead of spending an hour at the gym or half an hour jogging, we can find smaller ways to get more exercise throughout the day, using pedometers to make the best use of limited time.
It used to be that these little devices were inaccurate and often reported accidental movements as steps. A tool that is inaccurate is sometimes worse than not having one at all; but modern models have designs that are now greatly improved. Units now use software that can accurately measure distances traveled.
However, in order to get the better accuracy it is important to use one correctly. It should be worn all day long so that small movements are also captured which you might normally consider incidental. The fact is, small steps can add up over time.
In order to measure the distance walked the pedometer must be calibrated before use. The distance traveled can only be measured with accuracy if the unit knows how long your step normally is. Each device usually comes with instructions on how to do this, since the process may vary by device.
Many other devices integrate these step counters into their many features. While these may seem tempting, the best pedometers are usually specifically designed for the task. Often, step counters are touted as features for other gadgets, but were merely added as afterthoughts, with little thought to their accuracy. Purchasing a dedicated pedometer means you can receive a device specifically tuned and tested for the task at hand.
The newer generation of units are quite impressive using all the newer technology which never seems to end. These gadgets may be able to send information to your PC. Other items, like a person's caloric intake, may also be able to be recorded along with additional information to be used at a later date.
For a casual exercise program it has been recommended by some experts to achieve 10,000 steps on a daily basis. A workout like this can help in many ways, losing weight, increasing strength and lowering blood pressure. This number may seem like a lot of steps, but many are surprised at just how many steps are taken already each day. A pedometer can help you to determine the number of steps you already take, as well as to find ways to increase that number until the goal of 10,000 is reached.
